Basic Estate Planning
Estate planning is more than just writing a will. It includes planning for potential disability during your lifetime, protection of your assets and liabilities at the time of death, designation of a guardian to take care of your minor children in the event both you and your spouse die or become incapacitated, and other useful tools.
Many people (as much as half of the population) will experience a period of either physical or mental disability before their death. Lack of planning can make caring for a disabled individual more expensive and cumbersome for the caregiver. Good planning preserves a person's dignity and assets, which can be used for his or her care or can be preserved for the next generation.
The basic estate planning documents include the following:
►
Last Will
and Testament
►
Statutory Durable Power of Attorney
►
Medical Power of Attorney
►
Directive to Physicians (often called a
Living Will)
►
HIPPAA Authorization
►Designation of Guardian Before Need Arises
►
Designation of Burial Agent
►
Appointment
of Guardian for Minor Children

Advanced Estate Planning
For individuals and couples with net worth approaching the seven-figure range, additional counsel is often advisable, including the following:
- Review of a person's probate and non-probate assets to form a comprehensive protection plan.
- Review of a person's inheritance and other expectations in the future for appropriate incorporation into the overall estate plan.
- Formation of testamentary tax-minimizing trusts, or living trusts where appropriate.
- Recommendations for multi-generational planning where applicable.
